Inter county hurling management is a tough place to be and especially when your team has slipped from the top table of the game.
The commitment required to play at the top is punishing and when there seems to be no glory in sight it must take a lot to keep going.
Gary Hannify today decided that he can longer make the effort to keep his place on the Offaly county team.
Working in Cork 130 miles from home is the final straw which has broken the big man's back.
He has spent three seasons travelling back and forward from work for the cause but with Offaly slipping further and further behind the leading pack the big centre three quarters has called it a day.
It's ironic as he works in the Rebel County that he enjoyed his greatest day out, apart that is from captaining Birr to an All Ireland in 2003, against Cork and against no less than a player than the great Brian Corcoran.
For Offaly coach Joe Dooley it is another blow as it's always harder when you are struggling when you lose one of your most powerful players.
For new county coaches like Joe it can be tough when the hurling Gods seem to be against you.
